Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Utopia of the Seas, has just set sail, but Royal Caribbean isn’t stopping there. While onboard the preview sailing of Utopia of the Seas, CEO Michael Bayley made an exciting announcement about the cruise line’s future during a press briefing. Bayley announced Royal Caribbean’s development of an entirely new class of ships called Discovery Class. He did not give much detailed information other than hinting that the development, “will be really exciting, but we can’t say anything about it.”
When Bayley was asked further about the development during the Q&A of the briefing, he revealed Discovery Class may consist of smaller ships that would be able to access ports where bridges prevent larger ships from visiting. He said, “It’s not as simple as making [the ship] broader and less high, but we constantly look at the ability to get ships in these places. So, maybe Discovery class will have the great solution for that.” A timeline for Royal Caribbean’s debut of its new Discovery Class has not yet been released.
