Buckle your seatbelts because Frontierland is gearing up for a change in terrain! Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, has announced the arrival of two all-new “Cars” themed attractions coming to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
Lightning McQueen, Mater, and friends will be leaving Radiator Springs behind and venturing west into the wilderness. The area will be brand-new, and guests can experience the world of Cars in a whole new light. Expect to climb mountain trails, dodge geysers, and splash through mudholes as a part of the new attractions.
The first attraction will be a thrilling, high speed race rally across the frontier, while the second attraction will be geared towards smaller racers and available for the whole family to enjoy. The attractions will be replacing Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America waterway to create a reimagined section of Frontierland. The other areas of Frontierland, including Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Thunder Mountain Railroad, will remain. During D’Amaro’s announcement of the new attractions at this year’s D23 event, he said that this addition “will bring new energy to Frontierland as we continue to grow and evolve the story of what it means to explore the American wilderness.” The artist concept map for the new area can be seen below.
This addition to Frontierland is part of the biggest expansion to date in the history of Magic Kingdom. If you are interested in exploring Tom Sawyer Island or traveling on the Liberty Square Riverboat through the Rivers of America one last time, you will need to visit soon. Construction for the Cars area is scheduled to begin early next year. A final opening date has not been released.
